Sketch Book for the Artist

Exploring the view

In my second square I explored a simple
view contrasting soft, rounded, dark trees
with bright, horizontal regions of grass. This
composition turned out a little flat because
I have an almost even quantity of earth and
sky. It is better to give distinctly more pictorial
space to one or the other (see below).

Inventing drama

Redrawing the scene above, I have
invented drama with diagonals set
against each other I tilted the earth,
shadows, the trunk of a bare tree,
and broke a view through the
hedge into the distance with a dark
sky threatening rain. Remember,
your view is your inspiration, full of
information you can use to create
what you want!
