PAUL THOMAS

issues of European identity, values, ideals,
and personal and social struggles. Thomas
conducts his explorations in the mine of
Greek and Roman mythology.
Graphite marks Here Achilles chases Hector around the
walls of Troy before killing him. A vivid spectrum of energized
graphite marks and a masterly composition give this drawing
vitality and speed. Simple wall stones cleverly state their cold
solidity while also fading from our attention as the scene
roars by. White marks like flashes of light are cut though
graphite with an eraser to reveal the paper beneath.

SHOSHONE PETROGLYPH
The Shoshone people of Wyoming name
petroglyph sites Poha Kahni. meaning "place
of power." Each sacred image drawn into
rock belongs to one of three realms in the
Shoshone world: the realm of the sky, of the
earth, or of the water
Chipped image This is a sacred creature of the sky chipped
onto rock at Dinwoody Lake, Wind River Reservation.
Wyoming. It was made with a sharp implement, perhaps
a stone, by a supplicant in a trance of meditation. Parallel
lines within the body of the figure are likely to denote power.
