(Barré) #1

ORTHOPEDICS

COMPLICATIONS
Same as lunate dislocations

Forearm Injuries

COLLESFRACTURE

MECHANISM
FOOSH.

DIAGNOSIS
X-ray shows fracture of distal radius with dorsal displacement (“dinner fork
deformity”).

TREATMENT
■ Closed reduction should be performed if fracture fragment has any dorsal
angulation (distal radius is normally tilted 15° volarly). Goals of reduction
are to restore volar tilt, inclincation, and length to radius.
■ Sugar-tong splint, orthopedic follow-up.

COMPLICATIONS
Early arthritis (if intra-articular), malunion, median nerve injury, 60% associated
with ulnar styloid fracture

SMITHFRACTURE(REVERSECOLLESFRACTURE)

DIAGNOSIS
Distal radius with volar displacement (“garden spade deformity”) of the distal
fragment (see Figure 4.7)
