COMPLICATIONS
Complications are very rare, but hepatitis or encephalitis can occur.
COXSACKIEA-16 VIRUS(HAND-FOOT-MOUTHDISEASE)
■ Peak U.S. incidence: Summer
■ Fecal-oral and respiratory transmission
■ Typically affects children <5 years of age
SYMPTOMS/EXAM
■ Fever
■ Painful vesicles/ulcers on tongue and palate
■ Vesicles on palms and soles
DIFFERENTIAL
Other viral infections: Varicella, herpes, herpangina (which is typically caused
by other serotypes of Coxsackie virus)
