thestoryoftheirlifeintheworld—tomakechoicesand
sustain connections to others according to their own
priorities. Inmodernsociety,wehavecometo assume
that debility and dependencerule out such autonomy.
WhatIlearnedfromLou—andfromRuthBarrett,Anne
Braveman,RitaKahn,andlotsofothers—wasthatitis
very much possible.
