their legacies, make peace with God, and ensure that
thosewhoareleftbehindwillbeokay.Theywanttoend
theirstoriesontheirownterms.This roleis,observers
argue,amonglife’smostimportant,forboth thedying
and those left behind. And if it is, the way we deny
peoplethisrole,outofobtusenessandneglect,iscause
for everlastingshame. Overand over, we in medicine
