And in case he didn't bring it up, I brought up the subject
myself.
He began to warn me again: "Now you want to be careful
about those Full Gospel people."
"Why?"
Before he criticized them he said, "Well now, I'll admit they
live better lives than we do, and in a lot of ways they're very
fundamental in their beliefs—but that speaking in tongues is o f
the devil!"
"Is it?" I asked.
"Yes," he said. "It is."
I asked, "Then the Spirit that gave them utterance in tongues
is the spirit of the devil?"
"That's right."
I said, "If that's so, then the whole Southern Baptist
movement is of the devil."
He nearly swallowed his Adam's apple. He eventually came
up for air, sputtering, "Why—what are you talking about?"
"Well," I said, "the same Holy Spirit that I was born of in the
Baptist church—the same Holy Spirit—gave me utterance in
tongues, and I spoke with other tongues. It was the same Holy
Spirit—the same Spirit."
"Oh, no, no, no, no—don't say a thing like that!"
"Why?"
"Oh, it can't be so."
I said, "How do you know?"
"I just know."
I asked, "Have you ever spoken in tongues?"
"No."
"Well," I said, "don't be a fool, then. You're a Bible teacher.
In Proverbs it says a fool answers a matter before he hears it.
