UNIT 6 – THREE-PIN IC REGULATOR
UNIT OBJECTIVE
At the completion of this unit, you will be able to demonstrate the operation of an adjustable
three-pin integrated circuit power supply regulator.
UNIT FUNDAMENTALS
The LM317 adjustable three-pin integrated circuit (IC) regulator is designed to provide an
adjustable positive output voltage.
The LM317 IC is housed in a TO-220 type plastic package. It can provide a maximum load
current of 1.5A and dissipate 15W of power.
A heat sink, which is a metal tab attached to the internal chip, removes heat from the device.
