Exercise 2 – SCR DC Operation


EXERCISE OBJECTIVE


When you have completed this exercise, you will be able to to turn an SCR on and off by using
a switch and a two-post connector. You will verify your results with an oscilloscope and a
multimeter.


EXERCISE DISCUSSION



  • An SCR can be thought of as a triggered diode. The SCR can be forward biased but not
    conducting until it is triggered by a gate current.

  • The anode-to-cathode voltage drops, once the SCR is turned on.

  • Once the SCR is on, it conducts until the anode current is removed or falls below a minimum
    value, known as the holding current (IH).
