King penguins stroll on the white sand of VolunteerPoint on East Falkland island. Small numbers wereseen in the islands in the 1860s, but in the 1970sthe population began to increase steadily. Athousand breeding pairs now frequent the beach,which became a private reserve 50 years ago.
