Much energy is needed to excite an electron to a higher energy
level, which when fall back to a lower energy level it will emit
energy of shorter wavelength, in the above case ultraviolet light.
Wave- particle duality and Double slit experiment
The idea that light is particulate in nature was contradicting to
some common-sense-involving-phenomena. If you flex your
fingers and bring your hand proximity to a white wall; then
allow beams of light to pass through gaps of your flexed fingers
to incident on that white wall. Observing the shadows of your
fingers on the wall, you will see some faint margins, not sharp,
of the shadows. This is a behavior of waves not particles.
Despite this simple experimental verification, a famous
experiment was done in the 20th century well known as the
Young's Double Slit experiment. It was that experiment which
finally challenged Einstein's theory of particulate nature of light.
Two slits were punched into a single plate, which was placed at
a certain distance x from another identical, without slits, plate.
The two slits were separated by a distance ‘a’ from each other
and their size were of the order of the wavelength of light.
