new era of discovering more about the universe. This was the
birth of astrophysics, the application of physics principles in
learning much about the universe, from planetary, cometary and
asteroids kinematics to the formation of stars, black holes,
neutron stars, to the expansion of the universe and its heat death.
From Newton, we came to know why planets orbit around the
sun. That's because of the force of gravity, existing between the
planets, as Earth, and the sun. Since the Sun has greater mass
than the total mass (about 333 000 earth masses) of all objects in
our solar system added together, thus all planets revolved around
it as a focus of the solar system.
Firstly, to Ptolemy, the planets seems to move in their epicycles,
and the centers of these epicycles were the ones orbiting the
Sun. The same to moons around the planets, which gave a bit
complex planetary mechanics model. Actually, the planets, as
Newton discovered, are not defining these epicycles, but
orbiting the sun in Kepler's elliptical orbits. What is mystical
from Neanderthals was conspicuously unraveled. Planets were
not just hanging in space, but were held by gravity, and also
asteroids in Kuiper belt, between Mars and Jupiter, and thus
stars orbiting galactic centers. All of the star systems, galactic
clusters and superclusters to the cosmic web, are hold together
by this long range, weakest, force of attraction.
