light propagates in space. Maxwell showed that light travel in a
vacuum with constant speed he calculated as 3×10^8 m/s. The
study of light became a contested cornerstone in quantum
physics.
Plank, the father of Quantum Theory and quantized photons
Another great man who is at the base of this theory of small
things was Max Plank (1855-1947), a German Physicist who is
regarded as the father of quantum theory. Plank was appointed
to the chair of physics in 1885 and at Berlin in 1889. Much of
his work was in thermodynamics. From 1930-1937 he was
president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute.
He became Nobel Laureate in 1918. His famous discovery of
radiated energy, was extended by Einstein to electromagnetic
radiation. Niels Borh used it to explain the spectrum of light
emitted by excited hydrogen atoms. Later work by Schrodinger,
Heisenberg, Dirac and others enhanced the theory to the modern
quantum mechanics.
