EARSago my neighbor Martha asked me to teach her neigh-
borhood Bible study for teenage girls. I was rushed that week
and didn’t get around to planning ahead of time. So when we gath-
ered, I bowed my head and sent up one of those “Dear God, SOS”
kind of prayers.
Just as I looked up from my prayer, my eye landed on a Lifemag-
azine lying open on the coffee table to an article about a then-cur-
rent teen heartthrob. I read with interest of the young man’s rise to
stardom as well as his confession that fame had brought with it new
tensions and a tendency to stay isolated from others. He was pho-
tographed with his expensive automobiles at his California ranch.
Just a few pages away, I found a second article of interest about
Mother Teresa and her ministry to the poor in India. Here was the
story of a young girl who left her native Albania motivated by a call
