59. Prayer Works!

who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!

ARIOUSpeople in my Christian life have taught me invaluable
lessons on prayer. Virginia was one such person. I remember
the bleak winter she came so powerfully into my life. She was actu-
ally my sister’s friend, a nurse who was in Mobile to take a course at
the University of South Alabama near our home.
Every day we would meet for coffee. We would pray, read the
Bible, and talk. I was trying so hard to learn to follow the Lord, but
I have to admit, there was more stumbling than walking going on.
“I guess I don’t really have faith that God can do what he says he
can do. Or that he willdo what he says he will,” I would say. “I be-
lieve it in an abstract sense, but not in an actual sense.”
Virginia never lost patience with me. “This is new for you,” she
would say. “You’ll catch on. Have patience with yourself. You’ve got
the God of the universe on your side.”
