65. Rejoice and Be Glad!

let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24

HISyear my brother-in-law Ed is turning sixty. He and my sister
Ann are planning twelve mini-celebrations, one a month all
year long. As they were planning the first one, something profound
hit Ann. “Ed,” she said, “think of it: in twenty years we’ll be eighty
years old!”
He thought about it and answered in his very matter-of-fact way,
“Yeah. If we’re lucky.”
Grim thought, you may think. But it’s really a joyful thought when
we consider that God has given us a mandate to “rejoice and be glad”
in each new day. Each morning presents another reason to celebrate
him in prayer—to rejoice in his goodness.
The New International Version of John 10:10 quotes Jesus as say-
ing, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” The
King James (KJV) translation of that verse says he came “that they
might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” The
