67. Song of Surrender

ITHhis bushy gray beard, B.J. looked every inch the Grand
Canyon river guide. He had been taking people in and out
of the canyon, creating the adventures for more than a dozen years.
On this particular day we were standing above one of the most
dreaded and difficult rapids in the canyon. “People have lost their
lives on Lava Falls,” B.J. said, and I felt my heart rate quicken.
Quietly I told one of the female guides, “I don’t think I’ll do this
one.”
“Okay,” she said. “You don’t have to. You can walk around on the
high ground. But the last person who tried that got bit by a snake.”
So I just sighed and said, “Never mind. I’ll do it.”
Sitting in the inflated raft watching the other rafts go ahead of us
was frightening. One minute you could see them and the next
minute they were plummeting over the rapids into oblivion.
