101 Most Powerful Prayers in the Bible

(avery) #1

will recognize in him something deeper and fuller and richer and
truer, and it will ignite in us a desire for that kind of prayer. And we
will not be able to resist.
“Show us, Master,” we will find ourselves saying. “Show us what
you know that we don’t know. Lead us to the still waters that we
have not yet found. Teach us, Lord, to pray. We long to pray as you
do.”
Then as we seek his instruction, he will meet us and lead us and
teach us what we need. He wants to teach us even more than we
want to learn. He “is exalted in his power. / Who is a teacher like
him?” (Job 36:22) He knows that as he teaches us to pray, he is cre-
ating that connecting link between our hearts and the heart of his
Father. And that is why he came.
So we ask him to hallow whatever ground we’re standing on in
order that we may make contact with him. And if the desire in us to
pray is not strong enough, we ask him to strengthen it, knowing that
he will, for he is the provider of everything we need to meet him and
love him and worship him aright. There is no reason to stay at a dis-
tance when he is longing to walk and talk with us today. Let us draw
close and bring him our hearts.

O Lord, teach us to pray. We long to move closer to you, to live in
an intimate relationship with you. Teach us how to love you more,
how to pray more honestly, how to give ourselves more completely to
you. Amen.
