71. The Prayer for the Blameless Path

I will try to walk a blameless path, but how I need your help, especially
in my own home, where I long to act as I should.

ECENTLY I saw a talk-show host interview Celine Dion, the
world-famous vocalist who (in my opinion) possesses one of the
most incredible voices God ever bestowed on any human. She is also
the new mother of a toddler, a little son who is the joy of her heart.
When the host asked her what it was like to sing at the bedside of
her son after singing before thousands of people, she laughed.
“You know,” she confessed, “I always wondered what it would be
like to sing to my own child, and when I opened my mouth for that
very first lullabye, he bawled! He really did. I sang, ‘Lullabye and
good night’ and he responded, ‘Waaaaah!’ ”
This interview made me laugh. But it also came to me as some-
thing of a personal affront. It reminded me of how poorly my spiri-
tual “performance” at home compares to my spiritual “performance”
out in public.
