93. Trusting God in the Battle

HEBible is chock-full of stories of every kind: romances, adven-
tures, and family intrigues. One of the most common variety is
war stories. They often teach us vivid lessons.
One such story appears in Exodus 17:8–13. In it the Amalekites
had come and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to
Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites.
Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my
hands” (v. 9).
Here’s how the battle went: As long as Moses held the staff of God
high above his head, the battle belonged to the Israelites. But the
minute his hands grew tired and he lowered the staff, the Amalekites
began to win.
So two other leaders, Aaron and Hur, helped solve the problem.
