94. Two Women, One Guest

WOsisters prepared for one guest. Mary moved from task to
task with a thankful and a settled heart, quietly doing the
chores that would make him feel at home. Joyfully she pictured his
face. What would he share with them today? Serenely she readied
her heart and her home for his visit.
Martha, with sweat on her brow and resentment in her heart, was
grumbling in the kitchen. No doubt Mary would leave her with all
the work again, she thought. No doubt she would sit idly by, listen-
ing to the Master. Once he had arrived, Martha thought, she would
tell him about Mary’s thoughtlessness. He would understand. He
would speak to Mary in that convincing way of his and tell her to
give Martha some help.
When the Master arrived, they seated him on their most comfort-
