98. You Are God

Nrecent months I have heard people ask each other, “Where were
you when the World Trade Center was attacked?” It’s as though
they believe that if they can pinpoint that time and place in their
lives, they’ll regain their balance.
When something awful happens—such as a catastrophe like this
one—I am sometimes tempted to think that God is also shaken or
alarmed. I am tempted to think that the events of the world have
taken him by surprise. I may even want to ask him why he was nap-
ping when we needed him so desperately to be on the job.
To believe that a tragedy shocked or shook God, or caught him off
guard, is to miss his true nature. Our future may be uncertain to us,
but it is never uncertain to God. Our Father knows.
