12. A Prayer of Weeping

Hear my prayer, O LORD,
listen to my cry for help;
be not deaf to my weeping.
Psalm 39:12

Nevery life there will be times of weeping—crushing disappoint-
ments, heartwrenching realities that wrap us in betrayal and rob us
of our joy. There will be times when the bridge ahead of us caves in
and we can’t go forward, and other times when the road behind us
disappears and we can’t go back.
It could be a broken relationship that leaves us feeling as frail as
a butterfly’s wings. A move to a new city might make us feel like
aliens on a yet undiscovered planet. It could be the death of a loved
one, an illness, an addiction, or the loss of a job.
I am thankful for the prayers of David. They let me know I’m not
the only one who’s ever had a broken heart—not the only one who
has lain across the bed weeping—not the only one who has felt alone
and brought my brokenness to God.
I don’t pretend to know what makes you cry. I seem to cry more
