18. Behind Closed Doors

EVERALyears ago I was asked to be part of a seminar on healing
prayer at Trinity Seminary in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. Ambridge,
once a bustling steel town, is now a shell of its former self with many
closed buildings.
One day as our group was driving through the town, I noticed a
church building that was shut down. On the front door hung a huge
“For Sale” sign.
I remember thinking what a sad metaphor that was for what is tak-
ing place on many levels in the church today. Many of us have shut
down the spiritual rooms of our lives. We are even selling them out
to the highest bidder in a world of superficial, economic idols.
Why has our culture become such an unfriendly habitat for the
spiritual man or woman? Why do we find ourselves caught in a noisy,
busy existence, always reaching and striving, but finding it difficult to
