TransliterationofPersianandArabicwordsinthisbookfollowsthetransliteration
tableoftheInternationalJournalofMiddleEasternStudies,exceptfortheletter‘ż’(zad)
whichisrenderedas‘ḍ’(asinArabic).PersianwordsofArabicorigin,suchasDīwān,
generally, but not exclusively, use ‘w’ instead of ‘v’ for the Arabic letterwa. The
diphthongsareconsistentlyrenderedas‘aw’and‘ay’.
