2005–9.HeistheauthorofFigurativePaintinginMedievalIslamandtheRiddleofBehzad
ofHerat(1465–1535)(NewYorkandParis:ÉditionsFlammarion2004).CARLW. ERNSThasbeenonthefacultyoftheDepartmentofReligiousStudiesat
theUniversityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHillsince1992,wherehehasservedas
department chair (1995–2000) and Zachary Smith Professor (2000–5). He is now
WilliamR.Kenan,Jr,DistinguishedProfessorandDirectoroftheCarolinaCenterfor
theStudyoftheMiddleEastandMuslimCivilizations.CHARLES-HENRI DEFOUCHÉCOURheldtheChairofPersianattheInstitutNational
des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris (1972–85), was Professor at the
UniversitedelaSorbonneNouvelle(ParisIII),aswellasDirectoroftheInstitut
d’EtudesIraniennesinthatUniversity(1985–93).From1993,hehasbeenProfessor
EmeritusattheUniversitedelaSorbonneNouvelle.Hisannotatedtranslationofthe

EditionsVerdierinParisin2006.HUSAYNILAHI-GHOMSHEIreceivedhisPhDinIslamicTheologyandPhilosophyin
1965 from Tehran University. A former Director of the National Library of Iran
(1981–2),heisalecturerandauthoronIslamicphilosophyandPersianliterature,
who has (among his many other works) edited the collected poems of Ḥāfiẓ in
