Chapter 3: Installing SQL Server

3

Summary

Installing SQL Server 2012 requires planning to ensure a successful installation. Some of
the planning requires checking for minimum hardware and software requirements, proper
software patching, and proper confi guration of fi rewalls and network devices.

You must have a good understanding of the features and limitations of each edition of SQL
Server 2012 to avoid unnecessary upgrade or downgrade tasks.

In this chapter you learned about the changes in the licensing model of SQL Server 2012,
primarily in the shift of socket-based licensing to core-based licensing.

You also learned that SQL Server 2012 can be installed through the Installation Center,
command line, or PowerShell, and that post-installation tasks, such as setting minimum
and maximum memory settings, are necessary to prevent SQL Server from overtaking all
the memory resources and at the same time securing a minimum amount for itself.
