As with other SQL Server Services, Analysis Services can install multiple instances
on the same server, and often this is used to support multiple server modes. It is
often best to install the Multidimensional and Data Mining server mode as the default
instance for the server. Another option is to create instances for each server mode
employing a naming convention that would assist in knowing the server mode of each
instance.

The following steps outline how to install a Multidimensional and Data Mining mode
(default mode) Analysis Services instance, while also pointing out how the other modes
may be selected as part of the installation process.


  1. On the left side of the main SQL Server Installation Center dialog, select the
    Installation option.

  2. From the Installation options, select New SQL Server Stand-Alone Installation or
    Add Features to an Existing Installation option.

  3. After the installation runs setup rules, on the Product Key dialog, enter a valid
    product key, and press next.

  4. In the License Terms dialog, check I Accept the License Terms option, and press Next.

  5. After the installation installs step fi les and runs setup support rules, on the Setup
    Support Rules dialog, press Next.

  6. In the Setup Role dialog, select SQL Server Feature Installation, and press Next.
    (Note the SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint option; use this to setup an
    instance of Analysis Services in PowerPivotfor SharePoint mode.) See Figure 54-1
    for an example of this.

  7. In the Feature Selection dialog, select the wanted SQL Server features to
    install. Minimally, select Analysis Services, SQL Server Data Tools, Client Tools
    Connectivity, and Management Tools - Complete, and press Next.

  8. After the installation completes the installation rules, on the Installation Rules
    dialog, press Next.

  9. In the Instance Confi guration dialog, select either Default Instance or Named
    Instance option, provide an instance name if Named Instance option is selected,
    change Instance ID and Instance root directory if wanted, and press Next.

  10. In the Disk Space Requirements dialog, press Next.

  11. In the Server Confi guration dialog, review the Service Accounts and Collation tabs,
    make wanted modifi cations, and press Next.

  12. If the Database Engine were selected for installation, on the Database Engine
    Confi guration dialog, review the Server Confi guration, Data Directories, and
    FILESTREAM tabs to make wanted modifi cations, and press Next.
