  1. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to an Analysis Services server instance,
    and browse a cube.

  2. With a few measures and dimensions selected for browsing, return to SQL Server
    Profi ler, and in the Trace Properties dialog, press Run to start the trace.

  3. With the trace started, return to SQL Server Management Studio, and press Execute
    Query.

  4. Having run an Analysis Services query, return to SQL Server Profi ler, and stop the
    trace.

  5. Trace results should display as shown in Figure 54-8.

SQL Server Extended Events (XEvents) enables tracing events using a less-intrusive
monitoring system that consumes fewer resources. In addition, performance counters can
be monitored to get additional insights into the operation of an Analysis Services instance.

Summary


This chapter provided a general understanding of how to install and confi gure Analysis
Services, provided details to aid in changing Analysis Server properties, reviewed various
advanced Analysis Services deployments, and demonstrated how SQL Server Profi ler traces
may be used for monitoring Analysis Services performance.
