Chapter 55: Authoring Reports in Reporting Services

55

Report Item Description
Chart This item includes a wide variety of charts and provides extensive control over
the chart type and formatting.

Gauge Similar to charts, gauges come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. But
unlike charts, which show many data points, gauges display a single data
point. For example, a gauge might be used to display actual sales versus a
planned sales goal.
Subreport Use this item to render another report within the current report, usually dis-
playing some details not available from the dataset driving the current report.

Map Use to visualize and analyze spatial data.

Data Bar Displays the value of one textbox in a detail line graphically as either a bar or
a column.

Sparkline Displays data in one row or group graphically as a tiny graph placed beside
each row. Useful for showing trending of a report line.
Indicator Displays data based on predetermined ranges and value as a state indicator.
For instance, place an indicator object beside every row in a data grid. The
indicator can be related to a sales fi gure: Green for over $1,000, yellow for
$999 to $500, and red for $499 and under.

The Text Box Properties Window
After you complete the steps of the wizard, you usually do some more formatting to clean
up the report. The width and height of the textboxes can be modifi ed by placing your
mouse on the lines of the textbox. After the mouse turns into an arrow, click and drag to
change the size. Another thing you can easily accomplish is to change captions or labels.
Simply click inside the textbox and change the text as wanted. These actions are changing
the properties of the textbox. To get a full view of all the properties a textbox possesses,
right-click one and select Text Box properties. You see the multi-tabbed Text Box properties
window; the features are shown in Table 55-2.
