Chapter 55: Authoring Reports in Reporting Services

To create a simple tabular report in Report Builder using the ResellerContact shared
dataset, perform the following steps:
- Open Report Builder by clicking the Report Builder button from inside Report
Manager. - Click New Report on the left of the wizard dialog box, and then select Table or
Matrix Wizard from the center of the dialog box. - Leave the radio button for Choose an Existing Dataset in This Report or a Shared
Dataset selected. Select the ResellerContact shared dataset from the available
shared datasets. Click Next. - In the Arrange Fields window, drag the following fi elds from the Available Fields on
the left to the Values box on the lower-right side of the window: ResellerName,
AddressLine1, City, StateProvinceCode. Click Next. - Click Next again, leaving Layout options unchecked.
- Click on Slate for the Style in the Choose a style window.
- Click the title and type Resellers.
- Click the table and hover between the ResellerName and AddressLine1 columns.
Click and drag to the right to make the fi rst column in the report wider. Adjust the
other columns accordingly to allow a reasonable amount of room for the textboxes. - Click the Run button in the upper-left corner of Report Builder to preview the
report, as shown in Figure 55-13. If the report no longer fi ts on the page, you can
click the Page Setup button and change the orientation to landscape.

The Report Data pane to the left of the design surface in Report Builder has identical func-
tions as it does inside the Report Designer found in SSDT. A main difference between the two
authoring tools, however, is the lack of a Toolbox in Report Builder. Charts, maps, Sparklines,
and tables are added via the Insert Toolbar. Regardless of the toolbar used to access the objects,
