Part IX: Business Intelligence
they have now been synchronized, and business users now have free access to the same robust
features available in SSDT, without having to pay the license for SQL Server or Visual Studio.
Using the Report Gallery
The Report Gallery is the home in Report Manager for aptly named Report Parts. Report
Parts are objects such as maps, charts, and tables that have been created as part of a report
elsewhere and published to the Report Manager. One great feature of Report Parts is that
when published, their datasets are also published as shared datasets. This enables a sepa-
ration of duties in a business, enabling more tech savvy users to develop complex queries
for consumption by all Report Builders. Although reports built inside the Report Designer
cannot consume Report Parts, it is easy to publish objects as Report Parts from inside SSDT.
From the Report menu inside Report Designer, you can select Publish Report Parts.
A dialog box opens with all the available objects created inside the rdl. Ticking the box
beside an object causes SSRS to publish that object to the Report Parts Gallery when the
report is deployed.
To access a Report Part from Report Builder, click the Insert menu from the Ribbon. Click
Report Parts, which brings up the Report Parts Pane on the right side of the Report Builder.
Type in a search criteria, and click Search. Items that match your search should appear.
Double-click the item you want to add to your report. It should appear in the design sur-
face, along with its datasets and data sources. Figure 55-14 shows a report in Report Builder
that includes a chart from the Report Gallery.
