e-mail or written to a fi le share. In either case, you can specify a data source containing
the dynamic data for the report and write a query to return the appropriate data.

Data Alerts in Integrated Mode
Data alerts give users the ability to confi gure an e-mail alert to be delivered when a data
criteria is met in a report. The benefi t of Data Alerts is that the report does not need to be
rendered; the alert fi res based on the underlying data. Thus, when something happens, for
instance, sales plummet to below a threshold, an e-mail is sent to alert the Sales Manager
to run the report and see what is wrong. To use Data Alerts, you must be in integrated
mode. The steps to confi gure an alert are as follows:

  1. From a Report in the Reports Library, select Actions ➪ New Data Alert. The New
    Data Alert Window opens.

  2. Let the alert keep the default name value (the name of the report) or change it to a
    more suitable name.

  3. Click Add rule.

  4. From the drop-down select a column from the report to which you want to add
    the rule.

  5. Select the operator; for instance, for a column with a numeric datatype the choices
are Is, Is Not, Is Less Than, Is Less Than or Equal To, Is Greater Than, Is Greater
Than or Equal To. Type in the value that you want in the text box. For instance,
SalesAmountForMonth is less than or equal to $100,000.

  6. Select Schedule options, and select the frequency of the alert. The default value is
    once per day.

  7. Type in e-mail addresses for the alert to be delivered to.

  8. Type in a subject for the e-mail.

  9. Type in an optional description.

  10. Save the alert.

Disaster Recovery

Disasters happen. Servers crash or retire. To quickly and gracefully recover from an unex-
pected loss of a Reporting Services Server, a couple of objects must be accessible for restoring:

■ The Reporting Catalog (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB)

■ (^) The reporting services encryption key
It is also a good idea to back up all the confi guration fi les for reporting services upon initial
installation and thereafter when a change is made to them. For more information on work-
ing with SSRS confi guration fi les, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/
