SQL Server Data Tools.

As you can see, both development environments look similar. The same concept of a model
based on tables organized in tabs similar to worksheets in an Excel workbook is evident
in both development environments. This similarity is designed to bridge the skillset gap
between developers and business users. By simplifying and making the development envi-
ronment similar, both developers and business users can “talk” the same language and
deliver faster analytical solutions.

In the next sections you create and deploy BI Semantic models using PowerPivot and SQL
Server Data Tools development environments. The examples provided to create BI Semantic
Models uses the AdventureWorks Data Warehouse 2012 sample database available for download
at Codeplex at http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/55330.

What’s New with BI Semantic Models in SQL 2012?

The majority of the enhancements of the Business Intelligence toolset in SQL Server 2012 focus around
BI Semantic Models.

■ (^) BI Semantic Models can now be developed using SQL Server Data Tools (formerly BIDS).
■ (^) BI Semantic Models can be deployed to the new Tabular Mode of the Analysis Services Engine.
■ (^) BI Semantic Models support both In-Memory (cached) and Direct-Query (relational) query
modes.
■ (^) BI Semantic Models support MDX and DAX query languages.
■ (^) KPIs, hierarchies, images, perspectives, and roles are now supported in BI Semantic Models.
