Part IX: Business Intelligence
Summary
BI Semantic Models is a rich, scalable, and fl exible model that can be deployed as part of
a PowerPivot workbook or as Tabular Project using SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services in
Tabular Mode. The BI Semantic Model can be viewed conceptually as a three-layer model
consisting of the Data Model, the Business Logic, and Data Access.
BI Semantic Models are developed using the PowerPivot Excel Add-in or SQL Server Data
Tools. The user interface of these two applications is very similar. Almost all features of
a BI Semantic Model can be developed with the PowerPivot Excel Add-in, with the excep-
tion of roles and partitions available only through the SQL Server Data Tools development
environment.
BI Semantic Models developed in PowerPivot workbooks can be deployed to SharePoint2010
PowerPivot Galleries to manage automatic data refresh.
In addition, BI Semantic Model Tabular Projects developed using SQL Server Data Tools, can
be deployed to SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services running in Tabular Mode. The deployment
options include:
