Chapter 19: Confi guring SQL Server
19
Surface Area Confi guration Facets
In SQL Server 2005 you were introduced to the Surface Area Confi guration Wizard. This sim-
ple wizard enabled you to quickly lock down common security attack vectors in SQL Server.
When 2008 was released, that wizard was then replaced by the functionality of Policy-
Based Management. The Surface Area Confi guration Wizard’s tasks were then made into
facets within Policy-Based Management. You can use these facets to create policies
that dictate the status of the various features previously controlled by the Surface Area
Confi guration Wizard, as shown in Figure 19-4. You can learn more about creating and eval-
uating policies in Chapter 20, “Policy-Based Management.”

The Surface Area Confi guration facet exposes properties that enable you to allow or disallow
features.
Confi guration Options
Because so many similar confi guration options are controlled by different commands and
at different levels (server, database, connection), this section organizes the confi guration
options by topic, rather than by command or level.
