Understanding the Installation Process

T

he installation process for SQL Server 2012 is straightforward and relatively simple with the new
included tools and resources that help you plan and assess your SQL Server 2012 deployment,
whether it is a new installation, an upgrade, or a migration from another database system.

A successful SQL Server 2012 installation depends in great part on a good amount of planning ahead
to ensure it satisfi es both SQL Server 2012 requirements and your specifi c environment needs. Having
a good plan can not only save you time and money, but it also can ensure that your database systems
can adequately perform and scale as your business grows. Some of the most important considerations
that need to be defi ned prior to installing SQL Server 2012 include the following:

■ (^) Hardware
■ (^) Operating System
■ (^) Collation
■ (^) Edition
■ (^) Licensing
■ (^) Service Accounts
Defi ning hardware requirements is part science and part art. You must know your current hardware
needs and also anticipate future hardware needs. Following are some important questions and
baselines that can help you determine hardware requirements:
■ (^) How much average utilization of your server resources, such as memory, processor,
and storage, does your database server experience now during low, medium, and high
workloads?
■ (^) Are excessive processor, memory, or disk waits over extended periods of time reported?
■ (^) What is the resource utilization trend for the last 12 months?
