- Click Next. The Choose a Server Authentication Certifi cate for SSL encryption
screen opens. WS-Atomic transactions use SSL to encrypt traffi c. In this screen you
are provided with the option to choose an existing certifi cate, create a new self-
signed certifi cate, or choose one later. For the purposes of this example, select the
option to choose a certifi cate for SSL encryption later. - Click Next. The fi nal screen gives you the ability to confi rm your installation
selections and go back should you want to change anything.
When the Application Server Role confi guration is complete, you are ready to
confi gure the Windows Server 2008/2008R2 Failover Clustering Feature described in the
next section.
Server Feature Installation
To confi gure the Failover Clustering feature, follow the next steps:
- Open Server Manager. Right-click the Features section, and select Add Features. The
Add Features Wizard opens. In this screen, check the check box next to Failover
Clustering. - Click Next. The Confi rm Installation Selections screen opens. At this point you are
not performing any confi guration for the failover cluster, rather, just installing the
feature so that it can be confi gured under Server Manager. - Click Install to complete the Failover Clustering feature installation.
When the Failover Clustering feature installation completes, you see the Failover Cluster
Manager feature in Server Manager. From here you can perform all cluster-related tasks
including creating and removing clusters, adding clustered services and performing all
the confi guration tasks. Figure 29-2 shows the Failover Cluster Manager option under the
Features section in the Server Manager screen.
Validating a Cluster Configuration
Before actually creating a cluster, you should perform a cluster validation. The valida-
tion process goes through a series of tests against the servers that are part of the failover
cluster. This confi guration validation checks many options that can cause cluster problems
including:
■ Validating cluster resource status.
■ (^) Pulling BIOS, memory, service, and software update settings and comparing across
nodes.
■ (^) Network confi guration.
■ Disk confi gurations including the fi le system and latency as well as disk failover
when validating multiple servers.
■ Performing the validation can help to identify potential issues early. Any warnings
should be looked at and their possible impact considered. Any errors need to be
resolved to continue building the cluster and installing SQL Server.
