Chapter 29: Clustering
29
When the validation is complete, the summary screen displays. In this screen you can
review the Cluster Validation Report. This report should be reviewed for warnings and
errors. Validation reports are saved in the C:\Windows\Cluster\Reports folder and can be
accessed at any time. This includes older reports, so you can easily perform comparisons as
things change or you resolve issues.
If the Cluster Validation report came back clean, then you are ready to create your cluster.
To do so you need the following items:
■ Storage visible by all servers that are going to make up the cluster.
■ (^) Select one server to work with; initialize and format your storage plus assign drive
letters.
■ (^) Do not touch this storage on the other servers because you can easily cause corrup-
tion on the fi le system.
■ (^) A unique IP address to be used for the cluster.
■ An account that has the capability to write a new computer object in Active
Directory (AD) for the network name. (Or have the computer account pre-created
and disabled with full permissions on the object granted to the user installing the
cluster.)
Creating a New Cluster
To create a new cluster, follow the next steps:
- Open Server Manager. Expand the Features section, and right-click Failover Cluster
Manager. Select the Create a Cluster option. The Create a Cluster Wizard screen
opens. - Click Next. The Access Point for Administering the Cluster screen opens. Type the
cluster name and a unique IP Address. The name and IP Address provided will be
used to administer the failover cluster or communicate with a service application
in the cluster. Figure 29-5 shows the Access Point for Administering the Cluster
screen. - Click Next. On the next screen confi rm the settings you entered, and click next to
start the cluster creation process. - When the cluster creation process completes, a summary screen displays with a
completion success message. In this screen, you can review a report of the actions
performed by clicking the View Report button. - Click Finish. To confi rm that the cluster has been created, open Server Manager,
expand the Features section, and expand the Failover Cluster Manager. The newly
created cluster is listed under the Failover Cluster Manager.
This completes the Cluster Creation process. You can drill further down into the newly cre-
ated cluster to show details such as nodes, networks, and storage, as shown in Figure 29-6.
