Installing SQL Server 2012 as a Clustered Instance
Prior to performing the install of SQL Server 2012, you need the following:
■ Network name for the SQL Server instance
■ (^) Unique IP Address for the SQL Server instance
■ Your Windows cluster confi gured and validated
■ (^) A service account for the SQL Server engine (and as a best practice a separate
service account for SQL Server Agent)
With all of this in hand you are ready to start installing a SQL Server 2012 clustered
instance. This begins with a single node. Once this fi rst installation is complete you will
have SQL Server up and running (and fully usable); however, you will not have failover
capabilities until such time as you perform the installation on another node in the cluster.
To install SQL Server 2012 as a clustered instance, follow the next steps:
- Open your SQL Server 2012 installation media, and run Setup.exe. The SQL Server
2012 Installation Center opens. - On the left side of the SQL Server Installation Center, click the Installation section;
then click the New SQL Server failover cluster installation option on the right to
launch the wizard to install a single-node SQL Server 2012 failover cluster. - On the next screen enter the SQL Server 2012 product key that was provided to you
on your licensing package. Click next. - The license terms screen opens. Click Accept to continue the installation process.
- The Setup Support Rules screen opens. The progress window displays the setup sup-
port rules that are checked. These setup support rules include checks to see if:
■ The server needs a restart.
■ (^) The WMI Service is running.
■ There are no compatibility issues with the installed Windows version.
The required .NET versions are installed. You need to address any errors that show up before
continuing. If no errors display, click OK.
- The Install Setup Files screen opens. Click Install to initiate the SQL Server Setup
fi les installation. - Click Next. The Setup Support Rules screen opens. A series of additional checks is per-
formed to verify that there are no issues that might prevent a successful installation
process. When these checks complete, you need to fi x any errors before you continue.
You may see warnings regarding Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC)
not being installed or confi gured. You do have the option of not using MSDTC; however,
