W

ith all the talk in this book about the next version of SQL Server, SQL Server 2012, you can’t
ignore the “other” version of SQL Server that has been taking the world by storm.

Microsoft has put a lot of focus and energy into its cloud initiative, and this movement is not
complete without providing a relational database platform in the offering; thus, Windows Azure SQL
Database. This chapter focuses on managing data with Azure SQL Database, including performance
and data migration.

Overview of Azure SQL Database

Azure SQL Database is Microsoft’s transactional database offering for Cloud Computing based on SQL
Server 2012. SQL Database extends SQL Server capabilities to the cloud by offering relational data
services called Microsoft SQL database. With SQL Database you can easily create, deploy, and man-
age relational database solutions in the cloud.

SQL Database is one of the main components of the Windows Azure Platform and as such includes
many of the benefi ts provided by the Azure platform, including manageability, high availability,
scalability, and the well-known relational data model.

Entire books have been written on SQL Database, and it is diffi cult to cover all the great aspects
of SQL Database. This chapter covers some of the aspects of managing SQL Database and migrating data
to SQL Database, and some of the benefi ts of SQL Database, such as high availability and scalability.

This chapter is going to make certain assumptions, including the assumption that you have provi-
sioned a SQL Database server and are somewhat familiar with the Windows Azure Management Portal.
