Part VII: Monitoring and Auditing

  1. After naming the log and choosing the Advanced radio button, select Next.

  2. Check Performance Counters, and select Next.

  3. Select the Add button, and choose the counters to write to the log. Adding an
object adds every counter for the object, whereas adding counters provides a more
granular capability to select counters similarly to System Monitor.

  4. Select Finish.

The Figure 37-2 will help in case you get lost in the steps with all the windows that end up
popping-up.

FIGURE 37-2
The Data Collector Set is confi gured to write server performance counter data.

Data Collector Sets can be scheduled to run in the Data Collector Set Property dialog, or
manually started and stopped using the log’s context menu or the Start and Stop toolbar
buttons.

If the Data Collector Set fi le was defi ned as a text fi le (comma-delimited or tab-delimited),
you can open it using Excel. Each column is a counter value, and each row is a sample
interval.
