henevertiresoftryingtopenetratewithhiscamera.Thetaskinshooting
thecity,Ghirride-cided,wastoportray"aweboftangled
clues,thebindingtogetherofhistory,
sol-
idwalls
constructedfromrelationships,connections.Nobodysees
a
citysimplyas
bricks
andmortar.It'salayercake,ahistorynotebookcompiledinstrata."
Tofindaplace
wherethesecomplexideasmightbeunitedinasingleimage
GhirritraveledtoFerrara,aRenaissance
capitalof
commerce,learningandthe
arts.Althoughhehadvisitedit
before,
Ghirrifelt
thattherewasinFerrarastill
plentyforhim
toexplore.
Ashewalkedabouttheoldtown,hesays,"Ibecamefascinatedbythevariouslargeandsmallmodificationsthattimehadwroughtupontheoriginalplan.Irealizedthatitwasmuchmore
complexin
structure,planandspiritthanIhadrealized."Onevistaparticularlyappealed
tohim:It
wastheancientcastleofthe Estefam-ily,apowerfulfamilythatruledFerraraformorethan
300 years.Ghirrihadadmiredthecastlefromawindowinthehomeofarelative."But,"
hesays,"thelighthadnotbeensointerestingthen,andtheivywasthinner.Thistimeitall
cametogether,dominatedbythegreattower,andthelight,too,wasjustright—very
clearandbright,
