What
doesconstituteaphotograph?
Thedefinitionsgenerallyspecifyatwo-
dimensionalpictureofanactualobjector
event,adepictionofsomethingthathas
happenedatacertaintimeandplace.
Withinthesebounds,photographyhas
demonstratedbothitspoweranditslimi-
tations.Thepowerisinitsgrippingillu-
sionofreality,whetherquietordramatic.
Thelimitsappearwhentheviewerreal-
izesheis
seeing,onasingleflatsurface,
onlyselectedportionsofasceneoutof
whichthephotographermustcreate
a
senseofthewholeevent.
Feelingconstrainedbytheserestric-
tions,somephotographershavesetout
tobreakthem—oratleastbendthem.
Whilecontinuing
toemployphotographic
