TheDominantFeature
Adesignmayorganizetheelementsofapictureinanumberofways—through
balance,proportion,rhythm,formorcol-or—butoftenonemodeoforganization
willprovemoreeffectivethantheothers.Inbothofthesepictures,thevisualcom-ponentsarechieflylinkedinarelation-shipofdominanceandsubordination.Theresultineachinstanceisanimagechargedwithunderlyingtensionbutonethatalso,liketheworksofafinewatch,embodiesapowerfulunity.Thesubjectatleftis
aloadingdock.Itis,onthefaceofit,anuninspiringsub-ject;ifitweredepictedfromanotheran-gleorwithlesscontrast,itwouldprob-ablyboretheviewer.ButWolfvondemBusschechosehisvantagepointnearacornerandusedawide-anglelenstomakethelinesofroofandplatformscon-vergesharply,revealingthebuildingasakindofjigsawpuzzleofirregularpoly-gons.Hethenemphasizedthepolygonsbysettinghisexposure
sothattheshad-owedareaswithinthemcameoutverydark.Becausetheshadowundertheroofisthelargestanddarkestofthepoly-gons,itisdominant,andalloftheotherpolygonshapesaresubordinatetoit.Inthephotographat right,adifferenttechniqueforgeneratingdominancehasbeenused:Althoughthebackgroundofthepicture
isoccupied
byaspectacularfire,redflameonlypartlyobscuredbycloudsofblackandwhitesmoke,theviewer'seyecannotresistlookingattheratherordinaryelectricpolebecause
guywiresandtransmissionlinesleaddirectlytoit.Manipulationofposition,lightandcolorreinforcethepole'sdominatingef-fect:Thepoleisplacedfrontandcen-terintheframe,sunshinespotlightsthecrossarmsanddissectsapaleplumeofsmokerisingfromtheblazebehindit.
