selected
asthesub-
jectbecauseofitsbasicambiguity.Hu-
maninstructurebutdevoidoflife
and
gender,itrepresentedavisualenigma
whoseidentityandmeaningwereunde-
termined.And,in
fact,itevokedremark-
ablydivergentresponsesfromthepro-
fessionalphotographers
chosenfor this
assignment.Somephotographerswere
charmedbyitsageand
bytheeffortits
maker
hadputintocarvingandstaining
itspinefeatures.Someofthemsawitas
almosthuman,
otherswerekeenlyaware
ofitsdeadnessandseveral photogra-
phersvieweditwith
distaste.

mannequininadecidedlyunconvention-
alway.
Despiteitsartificiality,shefeltthat
itwassomehowalive,andshe
wasdeter-
minedtosuggest
theinaudiblepulseof
life
withinitsimitation humanform. At
first,shethoughtoftaking
themannequin
outintothecountrysidetoshowhow
easilyitfittedintonature.Anotherpossi-
bilitywastophotographitinNewYork
City'sTimesSquare—alocationwhose
jangled, mechanizedpersonalitywould
pointupaplacidcharacterthatsheread
intothemannequin.
Theserenityshesawinthewooden
figureimpressedher
mostofall,and,as
she
musedonthisquality,theanswer
cameto her.Shewould
pose
the
manne-
quinin
ayogaposition,contemplatinga
bouquetofchrysanthemums,asthough
seekingtobecome
onewithnatureand
theuniverse.

tingtheproperqualityoflight:

lesspaper.Asmallflashlight,covered
withasheetofyellow
gelatin,wasaimed
atthemannequin'sface.Buttheprinci-
palsourceoflightwascandles
—eightof
them
placedbehindthemannequinand
twoinfront.Inthiswarm,luminous
ambi-
ance,the mannequinisremovedfrom
theinanimateworldandtakesonthe
ap-
pearanceof
a
living
creature,filledwith
anairofinnerpeace.
