365 STEPS TO SELF-CONFIDENCE
Quickly write down five positive and five negative beliefs you hold
about yourself.

Which, if any, of the beliefs from Confidence Builder 220 bring
unhappiness, reduce your effectiveness, destroy relationships or detract
from your quality of life?
Cross out each disempowering belief and write down its opposite.
Turn it into an affirmation, commencing with the words ‘I believe in
myself ’. For example:
■ ‘I believe in myself. I am attractive.’
■ ‘I believe in myself. I am courageous.’
■ ‘I believe in myself. I am intelligent.’
221
Practise disputing disempowering beliefs. Disputing a negative belief
means examining its validity. It may be based on incorrect or
misleading information, so look for different explanations and
meanings. Ask yourself:
■ Where’s the evidence?
■ Did I miss something?
■ What positive value could it have?
■ What could I learn from it that will benefit me?
■ Does it really matter anyway?
222
Think about your disempowering beliefs and complete these sentences
with several endings:
■ ‘If this belief were really true...’
■ ‘If this belief turned out to be false...’
