metabolism in a negative way. e body gets more efficient on a diet, espe-
cially if you make excessive reductions in your caloric intake. is needs
to be avoided! is is why I urge moderate caloric reductions, along with
a moderate increase in energy output, and the acceptance of a slow but
gradual weight loss. e slow rate of weight loss is also necessary to mini-
mize the risk of losing muscle. Scale weight is only part of the picture. e
composition of the weight loss is the other major part. You want to lose fat,
not muscle.
. It took time to get smooth or fat in the first place, and it will take time to
get lean. How long it will take depends on how much fat you have to lose,
how receptive your body is to losing fat, your age, and your degree of appli-
cation to the program. Success will breed success. As you see the fruits of
your dedication you will find it easier to maintain your discipline to produce
further success.
Desire
. e most important deficiency among those who want to be lean is insuf-
ficient desire to get the job done. Sensible fat-loss programs work. But good
advice counts for nothing unless you act on it with determination, diligence
and persistence. Sensible fat-loss programs do not fail. It is the lack of con-
sistent application of the program that causes the failure.
. Because you are already a believer in the value of exercise, and are actually a
regular exerciser, you are already well ahead of inactive people who want to
lose bodyfat.
. Whatever type of body you have got is all you are going to get. at a friend
may be able to lose fat on , calories per day and without doing any aero-
bic work, while you need to drop to , and do moderate aerobics, is not
important. What matters is doing what you need to do to get the job done.
. Calorie counting may appear to be a chore, but quite quickly you will get to
know how many calories you are eating without having to weigh everything
and refer to a calorie breakdown book. Like with so many things, once you
get in the swing of it, it becomes much easier than it appeared initially. Get
to it—you can achieve a near miracle if you really want to do it, and if you
have a good plan.
