The book is titled Life from the Heart: 52 Weeks to a Life of
Passion and Purpose. The book is fifty-two chapters of three- or four-
pages each with exercises at the end of each. It was writt en that w ay for
a couple of reasons. Research shows that people buy books all the time
and d on’t ev er finish reading many of the books they’ve bought. I
th ink part of the reason is that they get bogged down or never find
enough time to sit down and r ead an entire book or even a whole
chapter if they are really busy.
I’ve written the book so readers can sit down and read it for five
minut es at a time. Readers can put it in the bathroom if that ’s the only
quiet time they get in the run of a day. They can get through a chapter
in a few minut es, and there is an action activity at the end.
Concepts are great, but if we don’t apply them, they’re not very
useful. The action step at the end is meant to help readers apply the
concept that has been taught in the chapter.
The feedback from the book has been incredible. P eople have shared
some amazing stories with me about how it’s influenced their life and
made a difference to them. That really touches me and. I do what I do
because I love to do it, but also because I want to make a difference.
When I get f eedback like that, it makes the effort of writing the book
worthwhile. It’s been a very rewarding experience.

I’m a parent of three children myself and I’ve been thinking about
how your ordeal affected your parents. They must be so proud of you,
but how did it affect your family?
BLACK
I will probably never fully understand that, to be fair, because I
th ink they did s uch an excellent job as parents in shielding me from
any sense of responsibility of what my difficulties took from their lives.
There is no question that for a good chunk of the first two or three
years of my lif e, their lives were completely interrupted by my health.
They had to take time off work and move to another city for a period of
time, so it created, from a practical perspective, a great disruption.
