(Brent) #1
teine molecules (see amino acid).
This often occurs between adjacent
cysteine residues in polypeptides.
The resultant disulphide bridges
(–S–S–) are important in stabilizing
the structure of protein molecules.

cytidineA nucleoside comprising
one cytosine molecule linked to a d-
ribose sugar molecule. The derived
nucleotides, cytidine mono-, di-, and
triphosphate (CMP, CDP, and CTP re-
spectively) participate in various bio-
chemical reactions, notably in
phospholipid synthesis.

cytochrome Any of a group of
proteins, each with an iron-contain-
ing *haem group, that form part of
the *electron transport chain in mi-
tochondria and chloroplasts. Elec-
trons are transferred by reversible
changes in the iron atom between
the reduced Fe(II) and oxidized Fe(III)
states.

cytosineA *pyrimidine derivative.
It is one of the principal component
bases of *nucleotides and the nucleic
acids *DNA and *RNA.
